Summer is coming to Norman fast and if you don’t want your kids to be sitting around in front of the TV everyday then you need to get a plan in place now. Luckily, we are blessed to have so many great things to do with kids in Norman. From spending a summer day of fun at Andy Alligator’s to hiking to visiting some of the wonderful cultural museums there’s something here for every type of kid.

Outdoorsy Types

If your child is the more outdoorsy type then they’ll love a visit to Lake Thunderbird State Park. The park features two marinas (Calypso Cove and Little River), nine boat ramps, a playground, picnic tables, archery range, and two swim beaches. A visit to Lake Thunderbird can be the perfect day trip or pitch a tent at one of their campsites for a weekend of fun. With hiking and biking trails, you’ll be able to keep the kids moving and off the couch without complaint.

Budding Scientist

Have a budding meteorologist on your hands? Then the National Weather Museum and Science Center is the perfect choice! This once traveling museum has taken up residence in Norman and visitors could not be any more pleased. The non-profit museum is a state-of-the-art facility that  houses many historical meteorological instruments, weather artifacts, and the newest innovations in the field of science.

More curious about Natural History? Then a visit to the Sam Noble Museum of Natural History is a must. Opened in May 1, 2000 the 50,000 square foot facility houses 500 million years of Oklahoma’s natural and cultural history. Walk through the Hall of Ancient Life for a glimpse of the animals who walked this land far before us. Or learn about the plants and animals that make Oklahoma’s Biodiversity the fourth highest of the 50 states in our Hall of Natural wonders. Of course, no visit to the Sam Noble Museum would be complete without a visit to the touring exhibit “Meglodon: Largest Shark That Ever Lived.” At 60 feet long, the Megalodon is  the largest shark to have ever existed and was a dominant marine predator before vanishing from existence over 2 million years ago. The exhibit features the fossils it left behind and full-scale models. Just be sure to visit it this summer, because the exhibit will be moving in early January.

Artist

If your child is more interested in the arts, then a visit to the Fred Jones Jr. Museum of Art located in the University of Oklahoma is the perfect way to spend the day! Free to the public, the museum is open Tuesday through Saturday 10am to 5pm and Sundays from 1pm to 5pm. The gallery houses permanent exhibits such as the Eugene B. Adkins Collection, Western & Native American art, and the Modern & Contemporary Art Gallery showcasing the works of Leon Polk Smith, Robert Rauschenberg, Roy Lichtenstein, Ed Ruscha and other important contemporary artists. Additionally, there are several temporary exhibits that should not be missed including Still Looking: The Photography Collection of Carol Beesley Hennagin which will be open from June 12th and run through December 30th, Visual Voices: Contemporary Chickasaw Art open June 8th through September 9th, and the Space Burial exhibit which closes on September 2nd.
